Cruise Ship Visitors
June through August are typically slower months for out-of-state cruise ships entering Hawaii. In August 2026, 1,876 visitors came via one out-of-state cruise ship. This ship had a turnaround trip where the group of visitors that came with the ship departed by air service after touring the Hawaiian Islands. The ship then hosted a new group of 1,885 visitors who flew into Hawaii, toured the islands, then most of them remained with the ship to visit the next out-of-state port. During Hurricane Lala, this ship canceled port calls to Hilo on August 14, to Kona on August 15, and delayed the port call to Honolulu until August 17, due to rough seas and poor docking conditions.
In August 2026, there were 11,477 visitors who came by air to board the Hawaii-homeported ship Pride of America for the seven-day interisland cruise. The Pride of America was supposed to make port call in Honolulu on August 15, but stayed at sea and delayed docking in Honolulu until August 16.
No out-of-state ships came in August 2025. There were 12,099 visitors who came by air service to board the Pride of America.
In the first eight months of 2026, 97,773 visitors came to Hawaii via 49 trips aboard out-of-state cruise ships. There were 6,501 visitors who flew to the state to board turnaround trips. Another 80,478 visitors flew to Hawaii and boarded the Pride of America.

Statement by DBEDT Director James Kunane Tokioka
In August 2026, Hurricane Lala caused extensive flooding and damage to homes, businesses and infrastructure statewide. The impacts were felt most heavily on the southeastern area of Hawaii Island, particularly the Ka? district. Lala caused an estimated $3 $5 billion in total damage and economic loss in Hawaii. A week later, Tropical Storm Moke worsened damage on Hawaii Island already caused by Lala.
There were numerous flight delays and cancelations during Lala. Alaska and Hawaiian Airlines reported more than 120 canceled flights across neighbor island and continental U.S. routes. Southwest Airlines also reported more than 80 flight cancelations.
Lala and Moke compounded an already soft summer season for visitor arrivals to Hawaii. In August 2026, total visitor expenditures (-9.7%) and visitor arrivals (-5.6%) declined compared to the same month last year. Both U.S. West and U.S East markets saw declines in total visitor spending due to fewer visitors and a shorter average length of stay. International visitor markets including Japan, Oceania and Korea also recorded lower total visitor spending and arrivals. One bright spot was the Canada market, which saw growth in visitor spending and arrivals compared to August 2025.
Governor Josh Green is actively coordinating state, federal and county recovery efforts to ensure rapid and efficient response, including infrastructure repair, emergency support, financial relief and long-term resilience planning. The state of Hawaii is working to help communities affected by recent natural disasters to rebuild.
Note: On September 7 and 8, 2026, Hurricane Lowell caused widespread flooding, power outages and wind damage across Kauai, Niihau and parts of Oahu. Information on Lowell s effects on visitor spending and arrivals will be available after the September data is published in October.
